Capoeira Class

Capoeira Class

Capoeira Angola is more than a physical practice. It is a way of moving, listening, playing, creating relationships and understanding ourselves and the world around us.

Known in Capoeira as Mestre Carlão, Carlo Alexandre has dedicated decades to the practice, teaching and transmission of Capoeira Angola in Brazil, the United Kingdom and internationally. His journey has developed through Capoeira and expanded into music, theatre, film, cultural projects and community work.

His teaching brings together the many dimensions of Capoeira: movement, jogo, musicality, berimbau, singing, rhythm, ritual, history, improvisation and the subtle intelligence of the roda. The aim is not simply to develop physical skills, but also listening, presence, timing, awareness, creativity and the ability to communicate through movement.

Music is fundamental to this approach. Carlo's experience with berimbau, singing, percussion and Capoeira composition has developed into a substantial body of musical work. For him, music is not an accompaniment to the game, but one of Capoeira's fundamental ways of transmitting knowledge, creating connection and shaping the roda.

Throughout his career, Carlo has also created projects connecting Capoeira with wider cultural and educational contexts. Through Kabula Arts & Projects, established in London and later developed in Brazil, he worked across community projects, schools, cultural festivals and international exchanges, as well as theatre and performance projects.

One of the most significant chapters of this journey was the creation of the Roda de Capoeira do Cais do Valongo in Rio de Janeiro in 2012. For five years, the roda brought Capoeira into dialogue with the history of the African diaspora and the cultural life of the historic port district. Before the roda, the Roda dos Saberes created a space for conversations with historians, anthropologists, artists, musicians and cultural practitioners. The project resulted in a book, documentary film, photographic exhibitions and other cultural initiatives.

Today, Carlo's classes continue this approach: learning Capoeira through the whole experience - body, music, game, history, culture and community.

Whether you are completely new to Capoeira or already have experience, the practice offers a space to develop movement skills, musicality, physical intelligence, confidence, creativity and a deeper relationship with the living tradition of Capoeira Angola.
